How AWE began
and what we’ve
become . . .

What began in 2013 as a small group of six band parents raising funds for much-needed new uniforms at Western Albemarle High School has since grown into Arts in Western Education (AWE)—a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. AWE supports music and arts programs across all six public schools in the western Albemarle feeder pattern (Brownsville, Crozet, Murray, and Ivy Elementary schools, Henley Middle School, and Western Albemarle High School).

AWE’s mission is two-fold: to grow and strengthen arts programs in our public schools by celebrating art and artists, and by providing direct financial support. We believe every student should have the opportunity to engage in the arts, and we’re committed to shining a light on the incredible students and teachers who bring these programs to life.

AWE’s initiatives are wide-ranging and impactful. They include raising funds to directly support school arts programs, awarding thousands of dollars in teacher grants each year, and hosting public events—such as our annual ArtsFest and multiple Arts Night Out programs throughout the school year—to celebrate the arts and generate additional support. We also organize an annual arts and poetry contest, assist with promoting school arts events, offer 2–4 high school students the opportunity to serve as student board members each year, and work to build a strong, connected arts community in western Albemarle County.
